- I have recently moved from Thunder Bay, ON and am looking to find names,
- addresses and phone numbers for amateur clubs in the lower mainland
- region. I have recently acheived my BASIC licence and would like to get
- involved. My 2m was stolen out of my car so I am presently without tx/rx

- Club auction well attended
- --------------------------
-
- This is not a digital item -- just an item about the St George
- club's auction in Sydney yesterday. This is a very well-run
- affair, the auctioneer (whose name escapes me for the moment)
- does an excellent job, and the organisation is slick
- throughout.
-
- The auction is a regular item on the club calendar and is the
- Bill Shakespeare Auction to honour a club member who put a lot
- of effort into the club over the years, but who has now
- retired from active participation, leaving it to the younger
- ones. It is a good social event as well.
-
- For local or near Sydney amateurs, mark your calendar for this
- month next year -- some very good bargains to be had.

- In addition to the FM capture effect, usually considered verboten on the
- aviation services, wouldn't the Doppler effect come into play at times,
- especially with the high speeds of military jets nowadays? I do not know
- how much a typical signal frequency modulated would move in frequency at,
- say, 650 miles an hour, but it is something to think about...

- Well, I am going to be a centrist in this discussion. I have been using
- SM AND listening to my radio. I found them both to be good in different
- ways. SM was very good in getting my numbers up to speed. For the first
- time I can hear an unexpected sequence of numbers and copy them without
- engaging additional brain cells. Also, I am finding word practice helpful.
- The common word groups became second nature much more quickly than if I
- had been using the radio alone(don't ask me how I know that, I just do).
-
- On the other hand, the radio is far more interesting, fun and the
- varied reception makes it more useful. I compare to the two methods
- to learning a musical instrument. You can be fairly proficient by
- playing musical pieces, but if you really want to be good, drills are
- important to strengthen up your weak spots. SM is a great drill program.

- I thought the Radio Shack unit was cheap enough to try. After playing
- with it for several days, I decided there was little advantage in using
- it.
-
- I was very impressed at how well it can take out a heterodyne. Then, I
- noticed that it would also take out the voice of a person who talked in a
- monotone!
-
- I suspect the Radio Shack DSP program could be revised, if someone
- familiar with them were to take it on as a project. By using better
- algorithms, wouldn't it possible to make it work like the "better" DSPs?

-
- This is WRONG. Absolutely wrong. It is important that amateurs
- conduct themselves in a proper way before the local authorities
- when representing ham radio. This isn't it. Do some research, such
- as carefully reading PRB-1 to see that it doesn't exempt anyone from
- anything. It clearly allows the local authorities to regulate your
- tower especially with regard to safety, location and aesthetics.
-
- Some Courts think that PRB-1 allows a town to deny a tower completely.
- Your mileage may vary, since some Courts are sympathetic to the
- proper spirit of PRB-1, which is clearly to allow towers within
- some guidelines, but not to deny them altogether.
-
- Please read the CQ article I cite in my other post on PRB-1 folklore,
- at the very least. And seek professional advice - ARRL volunteer
- counsel will give you some free time, enough to get you started down
- the right road.

-
- Jim, be careful here. PRB-1 is not so broadsweeping. PRB-1 states
- there should be a balance between the interests of the governing
- body (i.e. the zoning requirements) and those of hams. If the
- antenna tower limit was going to be anything over 50 feet or so, you'd
- have a tough time fighting it from what I've read before in other
- cases around the USA.
-
- Remember too, you want to win the war, your best course of action is
- to work WITH the city council, not against it. Ask yourself what would
- be reasonable for most local hams? 50 foot, 60?
-
- : They also stated that the ruling
- : has been successfully defended in both state and federal courts.
-
- But, unfortunately, not always. If the city attorney does some
- research, the attorney may uncover the cases that have gone favorably
- for hight restrictions. Be careful here.
-
- : The
- : response from Councilman Michael Curtis was "ask us for an amendment,
- : don't sue us". Town attroney Edward Jeand that PRB-1 needed to be looked
- : at closer to see if he could recommend
- : the amendment. The board also stated that there was no intention to
- : restrict hams at all and there needed to be a law on the books to protect
- : the town after a recent 3 year battle with a local radio station WTOR
- : which at first proposed to the town to place 3 AM radio towers along

- : have it settled in N.Y.S. Supreme Court in favor of the radio station,

- : D.O.C. denied him a license. As of this time, Attorney for the town
- : Edward Jesella is reviewing PRB-1 to see if any changes could be necessary.
-
- This is encouraging. Work with the attorney for the city and the city
- council. Don't take an adverserial position. They have said that
- hams are not the problem. How high was the proposed AM antenna towers?
- Would a hight limit lower than the AM tower hight be agreeable?
-
- I'm both a councilman in my home town (Mount Olive Township, NJ) and
- an ARRL Local Government Liason. Let me give you some inside
- perspective on elected officials...they all have egos a mile wide,
- they want to play the politically safe thing to do. Show them that you
- want to work with them and you have a far better chance of succeeding
- than trying immediately to go to court. By going to court you
- threaten their entire position (i.e. their opposition t the AM
- towers). Why not suggest that any tower limit not apply to residentially
- zoned areas. That is, the limit should be one of a commercial
- zoning area only (the AM towers would certainly be a commercial
- endeavor and require their placement only in a commercial zone IMHO).
-
- Again, TRY to work with the city, not against. I can't stress that
- enough. Be right in principle and losing the battle isn't something
- you want to see happen.

- Bruce N9WKE asked about Wouff Hong.
-
- Rumor has it that Wouff Hong is a secret society of ARRL members.
- Unfortunately, since it (maybe) is a secret society, the members (if there
- are any) of the society (if it exists) couldn't talk about it except to
- other members (if there are any), so the conversation you heard couldn't
- possibly have taken place.
-
- There are (rumored to be) initiations from time to time at various Ham
- conventions, but you'd have to show up at the announced time to see if the
- rumor was true. If the rumor was true, and you were successfully
- accepted, you couldn't tell anyone about it, if it took place. If it was
- true, and you WEREN'T accepted, you probably wouldn't be allowed to live
- long enough to tell what actually happened (or didn't).
-
- Good luck, and if you see someone unloading a goat, a bunch of penguins, a
- brass key, a Tesla coil, and a wooden chair with leather straps around the
- legs near where a Wouff Hong initiation was rumored to be taking place,
- you might be cautious. Then again, you might not.
-
- It's a terrible dilemma to talk about Wouff Hong (if such a thing exists).
- It's somewhat similar to the stories about dolphins saving people who fall
- overboard and push them to shore -- you only hear from those who get
- pushed to shore; you never hear from those who got pushed farther out to
- sea.

-
- Here's a question on the same theme. There appears to be a phenomenon
- associated with nicads that lets you charge them at a fairly high
- rate successfully, if you watch the voltage and disconnect the charge
- (or reduce it) when the voltage starts down. I hooked up my slow charger
- to my BP-7 and watched the voltage. It never peaked, it just kept going

- at a 0.1 C charge. I was afraid to leave it on more than 30 hours...
